This 2 day symposium will spotlight the value of art and culture in prevention, rehabilitation, and therapeutic treatment. Contemporary use of art therapy is very valuable in addressing many of the emotional and physical issues facing individuals, families and communities today. The symposium has a twofold purpose: (1) to broaden interest in art therapy and for professional development; (2) to introduce a new Art Therapy training program in Halifax through Chebucto Art Therapy & Counselling Centre in conjunction with Kutenai Art Therapy Institute (Nelson, BC).
Featured Speaker: Monica Carpendale
Monica Carpendale, BFA, DVATI, RCAT, BCATR, is the founder and Executive Director of the Kutenai Art Therapy Institute. With over 30 years of experience Monica is an internationally recog- nized educator, presenter, author, film maker and inventor of therapeutic board games.
Other Speakers:
Lani Gerity, DA, ATR, holds a doctorate from NYU in Art Therapy. She has been practicing Art Therapy since 1980, with an emphasis on dissociative identity disorder and puppet-making. Lani is the author of Creativity and the Dissociative Patient, and editor of Edith Kramer’s collection of papers, Art as Therapy, along with various articles and chapters in other books. She writes, leads workshops, teaches and supervises art therapists in Canada and USA. Her current research is in the fields of positive psychology, culture and art therapy.
Nick Zwaagstra, MC:AT, RCAT, CCC, RCT is the director of CATCC. He has over 15 years of ex- perience in counselling and art therapy, providing support, assessment and treatment for people of all ages who have challenges such as HIV/ AIDS, mental health, trauma, palliative care, bereavement.

Interaction
I'm concentrating on a new body of work, called interaction. It consists of 650 small canvases and will be shown at the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts in Canning, March/April 2012.
Viewers will be invited to interact with the art pieces by changing the position of the canvases and by doing so creating a new visual impact.

Using the Creative Arts in Community Training Intensive June 13 – 17, 2011
If you are an arts worker, educator, community worker or activist who wants to develop advanced skills in working in community settings using the arts, then this program is for you.
In this week long training intensive participants will explore the principles and practices involved in using the creative arts in community.
Areas covered include:
- design and facilitation of creative art programs
- participatory experiences of different art forms (including theatre, dance, music and visual arts)
- approaches to personal and social transformation
- using an anti-oppressive framework to work with issues of diversity, inclusivity and identity in different communities
Participants will have the opportunity to practise designing and facilitating creative arts experiences in a supportive, reflective context.
Training Facilitator: Tessa Mendel (click on her name to get more information).
Dates: June 13-17, 2011 inclusive. You must be able to attend each day for the entire week.
Time: 10 am to 4 pm.
Fee: $275.00 (This fee has been subsidized by the 4Cs Foundation to offer the training at
an accessible cost of $55/day.)
Location: The Bloomfield Centre, Halifax, NS.
